WhatsApp has built-in formatting (*bold*, _italic_, ~strikethrough~), but it only works in messages. Unicode styles go further: they survive in your profile name, about line and everywhere formatting is stripped.

Messages vs profile
Use WhatsApp's own *asterisk* bold inside chats. Use Unicode styles for your profile name, about text and status — places where the built-in formatting does not apply.
Keep contacts searchable
A fully styled name is harder for friends to find in their contact list. A common pattern: styled first name, plain surname.
Status works too
Text statuses (the typeable kind) accept pasted Unicode, so your styled name and status can match.
Pick a style above, tap Copy, then WhatsApp → Settings → your profile → Name, and paste. The style is Unicode text, so it displays on every phone that sees your profile.
WhatsApp bold is formatting: WhatsApp renders *word* as bold inside chats, but the underlying text is plain. Unicode styles are actual special characters — they look styled everywhere, including your profile, but screen readers may read them oddly.
Yes — paste any style into a chat. Both you and the recipient see the style; no font installation is needed on either side.
Yes. Unicode characters render in WhatsApp Web and desktop apps just like on phones, though exotic styles depend on your operating system's font coverage.
